Looking back the way we came it seemed surprising that we had seen no other paddlers or power vessels. Paddling into the wind had been a struggle. Waves in the open water caused great concern as the single-handed canoe took a few waves over the gunwale. Pleasing was the experiences we had with the wind behind us cutting the work of paddling in half. Now in the still air, those thoughts and thinking of how life in the Everglades had changed little in this particular place during the past two hundred years stirred my mind.
