Below the calm waters were broad expanses of moss that could easily trap a canoe. Doug and I took 30 minutes longer than Jim to reach the Chickee because we repeatedly tried to paddle across the moss and became bogged down. The best way to navigate the broad areas of moss was to stay close to the edge of the mangroves where the moss failed to grow in the shadows and circle around the open bay.
